Going around the social media outlets is a very moving and well intentioned picture of a older man sitting at a busy traffic intersection holding up a sign that reads, "No matter who is president, Jesus is still my King." Of course those are some very true words. But in order for Jesus to fully and effectively be the King of our lives, especially as we are just a few weeks away from the end of the liturgical season of Ordinary Time which concludes with the Feast of Christ the King, we have to be able to love as Jesus loves and that is not going to be easy in a world, in a nation that is so divided. So yes, our gaze, our focus should always be towards heaven, but since we still are on this earth, we are still called by our Lord to bless as many souls as we can with the fullness of the truth, love, peace and the mercy of God. Those things we never stop fighting for. But we have to be true, not only to God but to ourselves. So though we keep up the good fight, though we strive to reflect the presence of Jesus in all that we do and in all of the circles of our lives, including the political, we have to keep in mind this quote from St. John Vianney:All our religion is but a false religion, and all our virtues are mere illusions and we ourselves are only hypocrites in the sight of God, if we have not that universal charity for everyone--for the good, and the bad, for the poor and for the rich, and for all those who do us harm as much as those who do us good.
